Xtension, Chinese calligraphy brush with Indian virgin hair, 82cm, Silas Inoue 2014

Xtension was made for the exhibition X in China, in the means of accompanying a series of abstract paper works, which evolved around traces. Xtension consists of a brush I bought in China in 2008, and has used thoroughly through many years of watercolour painting. The hair on the brush has been replaced by human hair, bought by the Chinese company “Yinweige Hair” who has imported the hair from the Indian state Andra Pradesh. A large amount of the hair distribution in Andra Pradesh comes from the Tirumala temple, in which people sacrifice their hair in the means of cleansing themselves from vanity and earthly belongings. However all the hair from the ritual cleansing is distributed as extensions to beauty salons around the world in a profitable business. The work Xtension thus carries a history of the ambiguous relations between spirituality in the third world, and beauty ideals in more privileged parts of the world.
